The Team

  • Gordon Gullan

    Founder of the Group (acquiring the Urwick Brand from Price Waterhouse) with full endorsement from Sir Alan Urwick, son of the original founder, Col. Lyndall Urwick.

    Gordon has extensive expertise in organisational change and management development at executive and senior levels of private sector corporations and state enterprises as well as government administrations and agencies. During the last ten years his focus has increasingly been in organisational change planning and management in government reform & transformation programmes adapting the behaviours and attitudes of senior management to align with the strategic objectives for modernisation, so enhancing a sustainable transition for the intended reforms.

    Gordon recently worked with Alan Gilmour in the Pakistan Federal Board of Revenue and also with Jim Mitchell in the Uganda Revenue Authority. Previously, he was project manager and team leader of a two-year management change programme in the Serbian Electricity Enterprise with Chris Bailey and Jim Mitchell.

  • Michael Bailey

    Co-Founder of The Group. Michael has specialised in Boardroom consulting on strategic leadership and the facilitation of corporate strategy formulation. He is also a key Associate of Adair Leadership Development, having worked with John Adair in Leadership before joining The Urwick Management Centre (UMC) team in early 1980s.

    He moved from UMC to be CEO of a large construction & development company for three years. He was Chairman, Kent Region, for TEC organisation for over four years in the 1990s to provide mentoring support to private sector CEOs of SME companies in the UK.

    Michael worked with Gordon Gullan on WSP’s current Tanzanian SME development project by leading one of the training modules on the corporate environment and strategy formulation.

  • Alan Gilmour

    With 10 years of HR consulting and executive selection with Price Waterhouse and a further 18 years as an independent HR consultant, Alan is a highly experienced HR generalist.

    He has worked in Eastern Europe, Africa, Middle East, SE Asia, and Far East for a wide variety of mainly public sector clients. Recently, his work has focused on Customs and Tax authorities (Pakistan, Vietnam, Uganda).
    Alan’s particular areas of interest are organisation structuring, culture change, and performance improvement, and has also advised on the specififcation and implementation of HR information Systems.

    Alan worked with both Gordon Gullan and James Mitchell during their careers with Price Waterhouse, and more recently in the Uganda Revenue Authority.

  • Phillipa Rees

    Started her career as a civil servant in the Hong Kong Government at a time of change when increased accountability and efficiency in government was being robustly promoted. She used this experience in government consulting in the UK and the USA, as a HRD consultant.

    While with PricewaterhouseCoopers US international consulting practice, she was involved in developing a workforce development methodology (working closely with USAID) for use in international privatisation-linked initiatives, including restructuring of state-owned enterprises.

    She is highly experienced in facilitating government to private sector linkages; and government and higher education stakeholders, working closely with counterpart client/working groups to develop people-oriented solutions to organisational change to which they must have significant buy-in and ownership.

  • James Mitchell

    A specialist in recruitment, assessment and selection of candidates for middle – senior management posts. Much of his experience with Price Waterhouse was in these processes for major corporate clients of the firm. He established recruitment practices in PW Central European offices as they established in these countries in the 1990s.

    He has extensive experience in this field in major corporate clients in the financial and health care sectors. He has been a licensed psychometrics expert for Saville & Holdsworth instruments.

    Recently, he worked with Gordon Gullan in Serbia to develop the competence of managers in the electricity sector in recruitment and assessment. He also supported Gordon in delivering change management programmes for the Uganda Revenue Authority. He played a major role in training in facilitation skills for developing their team of “change agents”

  • Chris Bailey

    Chris Bailey’s experience of human resources and training spans four decades divided between corporate level roles in public sector industry and then over sixteen years experience as an international consultant, trainer and management facilitator.

    He has particular experience of developing and implementing change in public sector utilities in Europe, Russia and parts of Africa and has also worked on labour market/regeneration issues in both the UK and internationally.

  • Anna Bateson

    Anna's areas of expertise are boardroom effectiveness and the leadership of strategic change. She is a highly experienced facilitator of strategic thinking for global audiences of business leaders across public, private and third sector organisations. Combining pragmatic insights gained over 30 years spent in business leadership and consultancy roles, she works extensively with Boards and Executive Management teams.

    Anna collaborates with Gordon Gullan, sharing research conducted with Dr. Laurence Lyons into 'Principled Leadership' and 'Situational Intelligence'. Previously she collaborated with Gordon Gullan and Michael Bailey at Price Waterhosue, designing and delivering global programmes for business leaders.

  • David Firth-Clark

    A highly experienced HR professional, who has held line positions and interim management posts in a variety of commercial and technology multi-national organisations in the private sector.

    He currently specialises as an independent HR consultant in HR management and policy

  • Robert Kenwrick

    Now one of the UK’s leading independent experts on Job Evaluation and Pay Systems, his consulting career with P-E Consulting (formerly Inbucon), Hogg Robinson Financial Services and MCG Consulting Group has been closely focused on reward and job grading.

    As well as high level work for the UK Government and Health Sector, he also carried out job evaluation projects for the Governments of Malawi and Libya.

    He is now a freelancer and has co-developed a software package (Evaluator+) to support the job grading and pay modelling process.

  • Mike Watts

    Mike Watts’ career has encompassed HR management and Training roles in the Canadian Public Service, particularly with the Canada Customs & Revenue Agency, and with the World Customs Organisation. A Canadian citizen, he now operates as an independent Consultant undertaking HR consulting assignments for Customs authorities around the world. In addition to his extensive experience of HR issues, he holds an internationally recognised certificate in Competency Profiling and a certificate in the Balanced Scorecard, a strategy execution tool.

    Most recently, working with Alan Gilmour, he led an HR Strategy project for Vietnam Customs.
